Eastbound I-694 traffic moved this weekend to new pavement between Arden Hills and Vadnais Heights
ROSEVILLE, Minn. –Monday morning commuters on eastbound Interstate 694 will find themselves traveling on two new lanes of the interstate between Lexington Avenue in Arden Hills and Interstate 35E in Little Canada. Traffic was switched onto the two new left lanes of pavement through the area late Friday night, Sept. 22. The concrete median barrier dividing the eastbound lanes has also been removed. The barrier had divided the lanes into an inside through lane with no exits and an outside lane that allowed traffic to exit the eastbound interstate.
Although traffic has been switched to the newly built inside lanes of eastbound I-694, the roadway will remain two lanes until early November. The ramp from Rice Street to westbound I-694 along with the ramps between Victoria Street and the eastbound interstate remain closed. The ramp from eastbound Highway 10 to eastbound I-694 also remains closed until later this month.
The second and final year of construction to add a third general purpose lane in each direction of I-694 began in April and focused on the eastbound lanes of the interstate. Last year’s work rebuilt and added a third lane in the westbound direction of the interstate.
In addition to rebuilding the interstate, the project also included reconstructing the interstate ramps at Lexington Avenue, Victoria Street and Rice Street along with improving storm water drainage throughout the project area.
When complete in November of 2017, the project will improve driver safety and accessibility, increase capacity to lessen congestion and provide smoother road surfaces. In addition, the new roadway will enhance the movement of freight and support economic development.
