Second, final year of I-694 construction begins Monday, April 10 between Arden Hills and Vadnais Heights

ROSEVILLE, Minn. –The second and final year of construction to add a third general purpose lane in each direction of Interstate 694 begins Monday, April 10. This year’s work will focus on building a third lane on eastbound I-694 between Lexington Avenue in Arden Hills and I-35E in Vadnais Heights. Last year’s work rebuilt and added a third lane in the westbound direction of the interstate.

In addition to rebuilding the interstate, the project also will rebuild the interstate ramps at Lexington Avenue, Victoria Street and Rice Street along with improving storm water drainage throughout the project area.

As preliminary work begins, motorists will encounter lane closures in each direction of I-694. Crews will begin removing lane markings to reduce the westbound roadway to two lanes and shift traffic to the right and westbound I-694 will be reduced to two lanes early Tuesday, April 11. At the same time, the ramp from Rice Street to westbound I-694 will close and be detoured for the construction season. The bridge carrying northbound I-35E traffic to westbound I-694 also will be restricted to a single lane until fall.

On the eastbound side, workers will place barrier to move traffic into two lanes early the week of April 16. The two eastbound lanes of traffic will be separated by a concrete median barrier which will require motorists to choose a lane at the beginning of the work zone. Drivers in the left lane will be unable to exit the interstate between Lexington Avenue and I-35E. Traffic in the right lane will be able to exit the freeway as usual.

During construction, MnDOT will keep two lanes of traffic open in each direction. Temporary lanes around the construction zone will separate traffic from construction work.

When complete in November of 2017, the project will improve driver safety and accessibility, increase capacity to lessen congestion and provide smoother road surfaces. In addition, the new roadway will enhance the movement of freight and support economic development.
